In this entry we’ll talk about misophonia, growing microgreens at home, making sourdough bread, and a whole lot of comics. I do believe I’ve found a new ADHD hyper focus topic.
New Year’s Day Thursday January 1st, 2026
Today I am continuing to grow mung beans into microgreens.

In a few days I hope to have a nice sandwich made with these.
Unfortunately, my upstairs neighbor has decided to gift himself with sub-woofer speakers for Christmas and is playing loud and bass heavy music today.
I’ll try to leave the house to find something to do so that I don’t explode at the guy and end up breaking something.
I attempt to go to a comic book shop in Brooklyn that says it is open, but when I arrive it is not open.
I attempt to update Google maps to mark the store as temporarily closed.
Future Levi her to tell you that the update was not viewed for several days and ended up being rejected.
I’ll stop to have some Taco Bell by the bus stop on the way home. They’re open.

It’s so cold out.
My partner lets me know that the loud music has ended and I return home.
Let’s calm down by doing something creative.
I’ll send a postcrossing.com card to Finland.

They mention they enjoy reading about foreign politics, so I mention that today is the day that the new mayor, Mamdani, is being sworn in.
Today is also the first day of thirty days of push-ups.
I want to build small and sustainable improvements and push-ups is something that I do from time to time, but I’m not great about doing it daily.
I want to make it part of a morning routine and so I’ll try to really push to do it for thirty days to see if we can build a new habit.
It is now added to the task board.

Note to self: If you ever lose the good pen for writing on shiny postcards, it’s a Pilot brand ultra fine point NO XYLENE permanent type SCA-UF.

Well, note to you as well. If you end up with a cheap postcard that’s glossy on the back and hard to write on, these pens are great. They need a moment to dry, but once they do, they won’t smear. Highly recommend.
Friday January 2nd, 2026
The sprouts are sprouting a little bit more.

Lauri is also sprouting a little bit more.

While we’re out, we stop at a comic book shop and I pick up a few items.

The current run of X-Men and Gotham Academy are both fantastic. I suggest both if you’re not already reading them.
Saturday January 3rd, 2026
The sprouts continue to sprout further.

Today we’re planning to head to Brooklyn for a vegan bistro and to check out another comic book shop.
I would like to set up a “pull list.”
When I was a kid my local comic book shop would set aside the comic books that I wanted when they came in and I could pick them up. The more I ordered, the large of a discount I would get.
I was very poor in my teenage years, but I was able to supply my manga habit thanks to that discount.
If anyone released single-issue manga I’d be buying that instead of comic books, but they don’t. They release manga as teeny-tiny graphic novels and so I will learn to love American comics.
Ugh. It makes me so grumpy.
I’ll send a postcard to Tony on the way to the comic book store.

That’s a good postcard.
Before comic books, though, let’s to eat at the place with the coffee robot.
I don’t think Lauri notices me taking this photo.

Oop! She notices now!

Also the robot broke the law or something and got shut down.

Naughty robot.
Or what if this is the robot telling us that he won’t serve us?
Maybe he’s protesting robot mistreatment by refusing to make macchiatos.
๐คทโโ๏ธ
Also I bought more comics.

Planet Death? I don’t remember that one.
The Saturday Morning Adventures Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles are fantastic.
Keanu approved.

Sunday January 4th, 2026

Oh no! Baby leaves!
It’s time to hurry up and eat these!
Once they start to generate chlorophyl they start to taste grassy.
But most are not very tall, yet…
I’ll give it another day to grow.
Good puppy on the bus.

“Where are you taking the bus to, Levi?” you’re probably asking out loud while reading an online blog, and I’m glad that you did because I have an answer for you.
I’m heading to Midtown Comics’ Astoria outlet store to pick up half-priced 99 cent comics.
(I am writing this on Friday March 13th, 2026 and tomorrow is also a half-priced 99 cent comic book day. I’m so excited)!
I score many comic books.
Before I show the stack, we also bought some spinning book racks.

I am excited to have these.
Here is the stack of 49 cent comics on top of the spinning shelf.

This is going to be good.
I was mailing my comic books to my younger brother in Arkansas, but he said he wasn’t reading them, so I am now mailing them to Heather in Michigan.
I’m leaving little notes on them, too.

According to my white board, I need to start planning a trip to Japan.

I’ve also been trying to do daily pushups and journaling, but I’ll just let you know now that these didn’t stick.
Building new habits is hard.
I can do almost thirty pushups now, though.
Tonight I will send a postcard to Germany about my new found joy of comic books.

THEY HAVE SPROUTED!
And I really should eat them now.
I also need to feed the sourdough starter.
It’s been a little bit.

Oh good, it’s not dead.
It’s rising.

The tallest sprouts are about as tall as my hand is wide.

I’ll just give this a quick taste.

It’s good. It does taste a little bit grassy, though.
I should probably switch to growing a different microgreen.
The sourdough is doing very well.

Now that it has doubled, it is time to make the dough.

With the big bowl out of use, I’ll need to find something else to mix together the gluten steaks in.
I’ll try using the glass casserole dish.
So long as a bottle of soy sauce doesn’t fall out of the cupboard and land squarely in the middle of the gluten causing it to splash everywhere, it will be just fine.

Well crap.
Let’s send a postcard to cheer ourselves up.

Today I also decided to build a to-do list of adventure items.
Here is what I came up with:
1 build Gundam model when tool kit arrives
2 shop for a ham radio
3 look for the local ham radio people who can certify me
4 start the process of being a citizen archivist
5 Learn to draw new tiny trees for fantasy maps
6 plan the Japan trip
7 Plan an Alaska ferry trip
8 learn about various archivist groups
9 look for factory tours in NYC
10 work on the jigsaw puzzle under the couch
I think the ham radio may need to wait until next winter.
The goal of this list was to come up with adventure ideas to do inside of my apartment since I’m beginning to go a little bit stir-crazy being stuck inside during the cold weather.
The Alaska ferry trip has really been on my mind. I think this may be one of my next big adventures.
You’re allowed to sleep in a tent on the deck!
Don’t believe me? Here’s the link: Travel Policies – Alaska Marine Highway
Wait.
I’m supposed to eat the sprouts, but I don’t have any bread.
Heck.
Okay, one more day!
Tuesday January 6th, 2026
The dough has risen!
And has had additional flour added, kneaded, folded, oiled up, and it just needs one last rise before baking it in the Dutch oven.

These sprouts are probably too big…

GONNA EAT ‘EM ANYWAY!

Oh, the bread came out okay.
It didn’t do well in the cold and I really can’t put off these sprouts any longer, so it’s a flat bread.
It still tastes good.
On this sandwich is sourdough bread, cream cheese, and mung bean sprouts.
And it is delightful.
I didn’t make the cream cheese, but I did make the bread and I grew the sprouts.
Also, since it is Tuesday, it is trivia night.
I must remember to take photos this time.

What the heck, phone.
Why did you even save this?
Lauri stole my postcard and wrote one to Tony, but posing as me.

Okay, that picture is better.
Oh, I have a lemon and a lime in my Sprite tonight.
It is a good night for trivia.

But alas, we must return home.

Wednesday January 7th, 2026
There is one last comic book shop nearby that I have not yet been to, but I have an idea of what comics I’d like to pull, now.

Also these are the two journals that I decided to attempt to complete this year.

And this is a fantastic RPG book.

I’m sure I took this picture while telling someone about this amazing book, but now I’m telling you.
If you’re a tabletop roleplaying game enthusiast, this is one of my favorite books.

Also today after much urging I decided to get the trip to Japan.
I don’t have a plan, but I can’t keep waiting.
So I looked for when the weather is good in Tokyo and I bought an airplane ticket and booked a hotel.
I’ll be staying in Akihabara (Tokyo) for just shy of two weeks at the end of April.

Photo in probably Manhattan. Not sure why I took it.
This, on the other hand, I know why I took.
I need to build this soon.

Thursday January 8th, 2026
I have a friend in Montreal that loves a good coffee, and this is my new favorite local roast so I purchased an extra bag to mail to him.

Note to self: Get this coffee again.

For the life of me I can’t remember where we ate, but this was a dang good burger.
[edit: this is Burger Club in Astoria]

And this postcard was sent to Tony.

Because Tony is a good friend.
Friday January 9th, 2026

Today I will send a mixed drink postcard to Italy.

I tell the story about visiting Hobbitsville in Lincoln, Nebraska.
I mean, hearing about people visiting Hobbitsville in Lincoln, Nebraska.
I’ve never snuck in through the gates or climbed over the fence to wander around the large courtyard behind that amazing ritzy house.
I never saw the giant swimming pool, or the gazebos, the dilapidated fountains, or the wired off well.
Allegedly.
Saturday January 10th, 2026
American comic books have alternate covers and I hate it.
I keep buying duplicates on accident.
Sunday January 11th, 2026
Today we plan to visit the Voelker Orth museum to attend a discussion about collecting.
This guy had a gigantic collection of Chinese take-out menus that he’d been collecting for many years.
He won a Guinness book of world records and now the collection has been scanned and rehomed to a museum.

A delightful talk and one of my favorite places to visit in Queens.
And here’s a terrible picture of comics that I probably took on accident.

And here’s Penny trying on a new coat.

It’s cold out there, penny. Don’t go outside without a jacket!
After the museum visit we stopped for some ramen.

And I sent Tony a postcard about the day.

And Lauri was being snoopy.

The ice cream is fantastic.

I don’t have it documented well in my adventure notes, but the upstairs neighbor continues to play very loud music frequently.
We’ve talked to him, we’ve left notes on his door, we’ve exchanged phone numbers so that I can text him and ask him to keep it down, but he just doesn’t stop.
I’m losing my mind and I’m work-from-home, so this is beginning to have an effect on my ability to work.
We’re going to need to figure out a new way to deal with this.
I hate to escalate, but my noise cancelling headphones aren’t enough to combat the problem.
We’ll figure something out.
This has to end.
So yeah.
Bad neighbors are some bullshit.
Misophonia is some bullshit.
