⚾ Hey Warriors. Come out to (be) play(ed at Van Cortlandt Park).

A roll of the dice will determine which park in Queens to visit. The Warriors is showing for free at Van Cortlandt Park in The Bronx. I spend $30 on a collection of fancy paper because it’s another week of adventures in New York City!

Monday September 1st, 2025

For my birthday last year my wife made me a local Queens park passport book by finding cool parks around Queens that also have interesting back stories and compiling them into a book.

Which can be seen on this chess table at the park where we had some nice sandwiches.

I used a virtual die roller to pick a park and the result is…

*insert drum-roll sounds*

Rockaway Beach Park.

It will be quite the trek to get there, so we’ll work on some postcards during the ride.

This postcard is going to my friend Tommy in Michigan and I tell him the story about the first time I was ever in Chicago, which I will share with you now.

I went to a small Seventh Day Adventist school growing up and I knew that I was living a sheltered life, so I switched to public school for my last three years, but there was still a lot that I missed which will become evident in this story.

So.

I was heading to rural Ohio on a series of Greyhound busses to meet a girl I knew on the internet.

Like most long distance travel in the U.S., I had a layover in Chicago.

At one point while waiting at this bus station, an old guy in a trench coat approaches me and under his breath says “Hey man. You got a bowl?” to which I replied “I did not bring any cereal with me on this bus.”

I found out later that the “bowl” of a pipe is where weed is loaded and smoked.

I actually got high for the first time in my life the day after this happened.

This is the story that I shared with Tommy on the postcard.

I was so square.

Oh yeah, the US Open is happening in Queens, right now.

And of course, I can’t send a postcard without including one for Tony and so on this day Tony will be shipped the following.

I explain to him my idea of attempting to collect post office postmarks.

What could I send to myself that would be good for documenting these?

Getting the stamps on blank white paper would be best, but it would have to be on a stamp. No way around that.

I could try sending myself an index card.

I have some of these.

They’re smaller than a postcard, but they’d be easy to store and document.

I’ll keep thinking on this.

While I’m thinking about it, I’ll send a postcard to my brother Shane in Arkansas.

I have a long road trip coming up in two weeks that’s been on my mind.

I actually invited Shane to join me, but he wasn’t able to make it.

I mean, I invited a bunch of people, but not many people are interested in going on other people’s adventures, I think.

I’ve turned down free trips that other folks where hosting before.

Oh! Water!

We’re almost there.

We’re here!

Oh, they have nice little eateries here, too.

Ice cream time.

Unfortunately we did not bring swim wear and there wasn’t a whole lot of shopping in the area, so we got a view of the beach and a loose plan to come back again in the future for the swimming.

That’s the roll of the dice.

Literally.

Remember? We rolled dice to pick this park?

You remember.

Keanu remembers.

Tonight we’re seeing the Stranger Things play on Broadway.

Word on the street is that this play has the best effects of any live show.

Tonight we see.

I haven’t watched Stranger Things in a while.

I think I’ve only seen the first two seasons.

This theater is sort-of inside of a hotel.

Let the show commence!

No spoilers shall be shared.

The effects are fantastic.

The story is interesting.

There were moments of “Oh, that’s the thing!” or “Oh, that’s the person!”

Cool stuff, for sure.

Have you ever watched the movie The Warriors?

I only found out about it because of the PlayStation 2 game.

The game is great, so I went back and watched the movie.

Great flick.

I’ve been trying to get my partner Lauri to watch it for a while, to which she said “I should watch it, but since it’s kind of a local thing, there’s probably a way to watch it at a theater, or at a park, or something.”

And she was right.

On both counts.

Tonight it’s playing at the Van Cortlandt Park in The Bronx.

And it’s free.

Also, I’ve been here before for a tour of the Van Cortland house museum: https://adventurenet.net/2025/05/27/%F0%9F%91%B9-my-anxiety-my-bread-and-my-nyc-weekend/

We arrive and walk past a Burger King to get to the park.

We decide not to get any food, but after settling in at our chosen places on the ground, I decide to make a quick trip to feed and hydrate my partner and our friend who met us here.

Looking at this picture makes we want a milkshake.

“Can you dig it!”

One of the members of one of the gangs in the movie was here and watching.

A lovely experience.

What a nice thing to do at the park.

Also, I was at Coney Island a couple of weeks ago, so I recognize some of the rides from the end of the movie.

Today my partner and I went out for a bite and it began to pour rain.

During the rain we were looking out the window and realized that the Museum of Natural History was across the street.

We could make a quick visit there to wait out the rain.

I love to look at the bugs here.

Oh! There’s a Barnes & Noble nearby, too.

I keep thinking about the Paper Paper Paper kit that I saw at a Barnes & Noble a while back.

I should just buy one.

I’ll figure out some crafts to do with it.

It’s so expensive to get online.

Better to get it in person.

Oh, they have some other interesting ones, too.

I’ll look into this one and maybe give it a shot.

For now, these three items will do.

The crosswords are for Lauri.

These two are mine.

This Great Idea! book is like Wreck This Journal.

I’ll give a page in here a try today.

Kaleidoscopic Kollage.

Talked me into it.

This book will be fun.

And Penny giving me a bath will be fun, too.
