๐Ÿฒ Why Aren’t The Boats Racing?

Another week of living in New York City and learning how to find events. Sometimes these events are a hit and sometimes they are a miss, but do you know what’s always great here in the city?

The food.

Today, my friend, we have a wooden postcard to send to my pal Tony in Michigan.

The last time that I sent him a wooden postcard, it was snapped in half by a machine.

It was then placed inside an envelope and continued the shipment process to Tony’s home.

Hopefully this one makes it.

I think it will.

It’s thinner and more flexible than the last one.

A postcrossing user sent me some extra cards a while back and so I selected one of the Russian cards to send to my friend Jerry in Nebraska.

I tried to convince Jerry that he should come and visit some time.

He has told me that he is too old for adventure, now.

This staircase postcard is one that I had printed from some of my adventure pictures.

This photo was taken in rural Texas.

This postcard went to my friend Jeffrey in Nebraska.

I told him about the play Oh, Mary! that Lauri and I enjoy.

Keanu!

Also, Penny!

Double cuddles!

Why did I switch pants?

These pictures are from the same day.

Did I spill something on myself?

A mystery for the future.

Lauri bought me binoculars for my birthday!

I have been learning more about birds lately.

It’s easy to get sucked into bird watching if you go to enough state and national parks. (And county parks, and city parks, and river authority parks, and bureau of land management parks, etc).

I have a story to share with you.

I do not have pictures due to the sneaky nature, so please let the picture in your mind suffice.

My partner Lauri left her phone and a hair tie in the bedroom on the bed, and so I did what any good husband would do if they found these unguarded items lying around.

I drew pictures of them and left the pictures in place of the real items.’

DIABOLICAL!

Here is a picture of Penny as a consolation.

Today is the Dragon Boat Festival!

The website is a bit difficult to follow and I can’t figure out when the boat races take place, but I’m hoping they do them every 30 minutes, or every hour.

I would really like to see one of these races!

The bus situation is a bit confusing as there is another bus that is changing drivers nearby.

But the shuttle arrives and we take it to the fest!

Traveling through Flushing, NY.

The boats!

There are a lot of food stalls here.

Unfortunately there are no boat races, though.

Maybe these already happened?

I suspect the website didn’t bother to mention that these have already been completed.

I’m not really sure, but it was certainly interesting to see.

While we’re here in Flushing, we will make a quick trip to the mall for some fun.

Lauri loves picture booths.

And I like pictures of picture booths.

Meta.

Whoa.

There’s a burger place here in Queens that has a large selection of ground meats.

There’s also a lot of bear masks.

Okay, while we’re here in the burger zone where my wife isn’t reading I can tell you another story from the Dragon Boat Fest.

There were Mets mascots at the event.

Lauri tried to get a fist bump from them, but she was denied.

Not, like, in a mean way.

I think they just didn’t see her.

But maybe in a mean way.

Lauri still likes the Mets, so I don’t think it was too big of a snub.

And the burgers were delightful.

Unique sauces to dip the fries in, as well.

One of those is a maple aioli.

Progress is being made on the puzzle that Lauri got for me at a jigsaw puzzle swap.

She brought some puzzles that I had previously completed and picked a couple that she thought that I would like.

This one is a collage of 90s things.

One small gripe, though, is that Greenday is in this puzzle (below and to the right of “The 1990’s,” but they are dressed in their 2010s attire from the American Idiot days, not their 90s look from the Dookie days.

Oops.

My childhood didn’t have as much parenting as others and so there are certain common knowledge items that I missed out on.

I had to learn to shave with almost no instruction, for example.

I used only water and a razor for about a year before I decided to try shaving cream.

One of these topics that I was never really sure about is how long pants/jeans should be.

I used to buy them too long and the cuffs would get under my shoes and become stained and ripped.

So I started buying shorter cuts.

Should they cover my ankles?

Should my socks show?

I just searched the internet and ended up reading this article to learn about this topic.

I have been buying jeans that are too short, lately.

*sigh*

Oh well.

I know now.

Future pants and jeans will be the correct length.

Another thing I did today is that I ordered paraffin wax off of eBay.

I am going to make some fire starters (twisted fire starters) for my upcoming camping trip.

I don’t have sawdust, but I see other recipes that use newspapers or toilet paper.

When the wax arrives, I will try make some up for the trip!

What the heck.

While I’m doing all of this research, I should knock out all of the research items on the adventure list.

I add a lot of “look into this thing that someone told me about” items.

These typically lead to me saying “Well that looks cool.” and then adding the place to my adventure list as a “travel to” topic.

These are all completed and many new locations to travel to have been added to the list.

One thing that always fascinates me is the idea of sending postcards to unique places.

There is an English post office in Antarctica that sends postcards to people.

They also have a blog.

Did you know that they sent a postcard from Antarctica to space?

That’s so fucking cool.
