๐Ÿดโ€โ˜ ๏ธ From Postcards to Penzance! – A Week of NYC Adventures

Wednesday April 16th, 2025

If you’ve ever spent significant time in Nebraska, you’ll understand the delight or horror of this attempt at making a postcard.

My wife brought back food wrappers from Nebraska so that we could make a postcard with it.

This one went to my pal Tony in Michigan.

The Dutch oven is still working well for making bread, but I would like to get a sourdough starter.

Mostly because I don’t want to keep paying for yeast.

Tonight we have tickets to Pirates of Penzance.

This version has been lightly modified and takes place in New Orleans.

This version is staring Ramin Karimloo, Jinkx Monsoon, and David Hyde Pierce.

A delightful performance.

Modern Major General will be stuck in my head for a week, now.

Tiny postcards.

I like to make these out of random food boxes, but I worry that these small ones aren’t arriving.

Postcards that are unusual sizes require more postage rather than the postcard stamps that I have been using.

My friend Tommy in Michigan sends me selfies with the postcards when they arrive, but he hasn’t sent any of the tiny cards…

I should try using more postage to see if this helps.

Y’know what? This last postcard went to Atlas in Austin, and I think it did arrive. I should ask him if it was this specific card as I did send him more than one.

Postcards go undelivered fairly often in my experience.

Since there’s usually not a return address on them, it can be hard to tell.

Next time I send a tiny card, I’ll add a return address to it.

Tonight we went and played some Mario Party at a friend’s place here in Astoria, and we happened to catch a Catholic parade happening outside.

Neat.

Soccer game! Wooo!

I didn’t ask my friend’s permission to share his picture, but I’m sure he would approve of this emoji being used as a stand-in.

It’s a pretty close facsimile of his actual face.

Two things to note about this game.

  1. They have flamethrowers on the goal posts. I was not aware of this in advance, otherwise there would be pictures.
  2. Mascots are always fun.

Fun venue.

Red Bull always has cool stuff.

Today we visit Wave Hill Public Garden & Cultural Center in The Bronx.

Sometimes when I’m walking I take pictures of houses that give me ideas for Minecraft building ideas.

I’ve never build anything with a style like this in Minecraft, but I have some ideas on how to make it happen.

It’s a bit of a walk from the train station and it is very steep.

But we made it!

Only a little bit late.

I can see the tour has started, but it’s a free tour so we can just hop in.

There are loads of great trees and plants here!

Sometimes I take close-up photos so that I can use plant identification apps on my phone to figure out what I’m looking at and whether the plant is poisonious.

We have a small group of about 16 on this tour.

The weather is perfect.

They also have a nice art studio thing here.

Ohh, look at this flower!

And check out this old bowling lane!

It’s behind the bench.

I’ll sneak a quick picture as we’re leaving without all of the people in it.

How cool is that!

Spooky room!

Or maybe the low light level just made this photo blurry.

Blurry and spooky are hard to tell apart.

Back to the garden!

Lily pads and fish.

I looked at this next flower for a while.

It looks like someone printed it on an ink-jet printer.

Future garden plants?

Look at this one!

The petals look like curled wood!

And this stuff growing on the side of a concrete wall!

This place is magical.

But all good things must come to an end.

Time to head back into the city.

But not without dropping off a postcard for Tony.

Tetris tater-tots.

Hahaha!

You can see the indents where I dipped the tots into the ketchup.

Time to visit Central Park.

We wit on the benches for a bit and watch the water and ducks.

There is a nice lady giving compliments to folks walking past.

She gives a child a bag of chips to use to feed the ducks.

How pleasant.

That’s the nice lady in the chair.

Another fantastic day.

This postcard is off to Germany.

I chatted about ARGs (alternate reality games) on this one.

I’ve been getting the craving to plan an ARG again lately.

I’d like to participate in one of the group social store ones again.

Those are fun.

Penny is fascinated with the water fountain and has learned how to pull the top of it off so that she can try to learn about the mysterious water pump.

Or she just really likes to be naughty.

Tonight we have tickets to the Broadway musical Death Becomes Her.

My partner Lauri gave me a list of a few shows she wants to see and said I could pick.

I’ve heard this one is very fun and it sounds like it’s right up her alley.

Also one of the members of Destiny’s Child is one of the actors in this show.

They let us wait inside before the show.

That doesn’t happen often.

It’s nice.

Lololol.

Hilarious show!

Absolutely worth it.

Another unusual sized postcard!

This time I did put my return address on the card.

I also ordered some Loganberry jam for myself and for Tony.

One of our favorite television shows when we were roommates back in the 90s was a show called Ned & Stacey.

There’s a whole episode about Loganberries.

One of the gags is about Ned being naked and smearing loganberries on his naked body in a video he shares with his friends.

I’ll find a way to do something similar.

But with less nudity.

And now for a bunch of pictures of Penny and some French fries that I made in the air fryer.

Thursday April 24th, 2025

Tonight we have tickets to THERE IS NO SPOON.

I will share the description from their website.

“Five actors and two musical Foley artists perform a live, shot-for-shot parody of The Matrix in under an hour. A thrilling, imaginative, and gloriously stupid evening delivered in Recent Cutbacksโ€™ trademark blend of high-octane physical comedy and lo-fi special effects.”

Hilarious!

I wanted to sit up front, but Lauri said “This is a comedy show. You don’t want to get roasted. It might not happen, but you’re at risk if you sit in the front.”

No one got roasted, but she makes a good point.

I will trust her seating strategy.

The show is fantastic!

I’ll keep an eye on the team that made this, Recent Cutbacks.

What a fun and funny show.

Penny says “Hi.”
