๐Ÿ‘น My Anxiety, My Bread, and My NYC Weekend

Saturday April 12th, 2025

Good morning from Queens.

My wife is still out of town visiting family and I have the city to myself.

Time to be a ruckus!

First stop: Van Cortlandt House Museum for the guided tour.

Get to Manhattan and take the 1 train uptown to the Van Cortlandt Park stop.

It’s nice when the trains are above ground and my phone has reception.

It’s also nice when it’s not raining, but this will be an indoor tour so it is a good visit for spring time.

I’m here too early.

It will be a bit until the tour starts, so at the suggestion of the clerk at the gift shop I run down the road just a bit to a carrot cake shop.

Aw yeah.

Back to the museum!

This is one of those historic moments like George Washington that is both important and fucked up.

“This house was certainly built and maintained by slaves.” is what I am referring to.

This location has an important history concerning the trade and bookkeeping of New York City.

And they also have spooky hay-bed-closets.

The image above is a bunk bed. There’s another bed below.

No thank you.

Check out these individually painted tiles.

Or this carved wooden boat found in the nearby lake.

Or one of the spooky faces built into the side of the house.

Truly a fascinating place and a great tour.

I do have one teeny tiny gripe, though.

It is very small.

At one point I said “Is this a harpsichord?” to what looked to me to be a harpsichord and was told “No, it is a Spinet.”

Upon returning home and searching for “Spinet,” I learned that a Spinet is a type of harpsichord.

Okay, tiny gripe over.

Thank you for attending my tiny Ted talk.

On the way home our bus got stuck behind a “parked” delivery car.

This dickhead made us all wait here for about ten minutes.

Such is driving in the city.

But now I have an embarrassing story to share with you.

Every month my partner and I go to watch Katsura Sunshine’s Rakugo show at New World Stages and she tells me that I should go to the after-show to buy Katsura Sunshine a drink.

In my head there is a big round table with around ten to twenty people laughing and having drinks and I decide that tonight that no matter what I’ll just go. Just go. Don’t be nervous and just go to the after-party.

I stand in front of the theater for a while waiting for folks to come out and eventually I realize that folks may have taken a different exit to attend the gathering, so I make my way over and I see Katsura sunshine sitting at a table with about five other people.

I think to myself that I figured there would be more people here, but I order a drink and ask to sit at the table and I am welcomed. I ask a quick question, but mostly listen to the other folks chatting and swapping stores with Katsura Sunshine and eventually he says “Well, I should make my way to the other tables.”

And the horror sets in.

I look around the restaurant and all of the tables are for folks who have come to meet Katsura Sunshine.

I have just crashed the party at this table.

I apologize profusely and try to swap a few stories, but I finish my drink and make a quick exit.

Fighting anxiety and working my way home.

Fuck.

Time to toss back a few drinks and get some bread dough started for an overnight loaf.

Please allow me a quick moment to revisit to the rakugo show.

It was another fun and funny performance by Katsura Sunshine and the crowd was great.

My nonsense anxiety aside, the show was fantastic and I have again purchased tickets to the next performance.

Sunday April 13th, 2025

Still horrified from last night, but working through the steps “You didn’t know. You couldn’t have known. You made it clear you didn’t know. You’ll probably never see those people again.”

Stupid human anxiety.

At least I have my overnight dough.

Which hasn’t risen.

Because I forgot to add yeast last night.

Can you add yeast late and still get a rise?

Yes.

Yes you can.

Successful loafening.

And now a barrage of cat pics.

Keanu being cute

Penny being cautious.

And then aggressively playfu.

And then naughty.

While debating being extra naughty.

And greedy.

And then jumping into her favorite climbing spot, but being surprised to see Keanu at the top and poorly plummeting into a hole and flailing her legs because of it.

Lazy Remus.

After the tour, comedy, drinks, and bread it is now time for my wife Lauri to return.

Off to the airport!

While waiting here, I wrote a postcard to my pal Tony in Michigan about the whole Rakugo story from the other night.

And then I attempted to help my wife find her luggage which was somewhere questionable.

Is this it?

It was not.

Lauri has her own stories from the flight.

Someone got kicked off of the plane and Lauri also made a new friend.

Tuesday April 15th, 2025

We previously placed seeds into wet paper towels in plastic bags taped up in the window, but it is now time to plant them into dirt.

We left some of the seeds in the wet bags for too long.

They had mold.

But we also had extra seeds, so we were able to fill all of the little pots.

Also I will make another loaf of bread because I ate that other one too fast.

Oops.

This upcoming weekend we have plans to go to a soccer game and another historic tour.

Cheers.
