A postcard to a former co-worker in Austin, Texas.

I told this former co-worker about the Texan I recently met on a Long Island train.

Today my partner Lauri is leaving to visit family out of state and I will have the place to myself.

You better believe that there will be wild going-to-historic-sites parties while I don’t have any supervision!

Keanu attempts to inhibit the packing.

One of the things that Lauri made for me is a passport of Queens parks and so today I am off to check Herman A. MacNeil Park off of the list!

Herman A. MacNeil Park is in College Point, Queens.

Google Maps might suggest a quick trip by car, but weekend buses have their own agenda.

I’ll need to be careful with my time so that I do not miss one of the infrequent busses out of here.

Who am I kidding? I’m having a nice time wandering around and ignoring responsibilities.

I miss the next bus. There’s another park in my book nearby. Powell’s Cove Park. I’ll walk there and sneak in a visit.

Cool houses around here.

Not what I expected this park entrance to look like.

See that log in front of the water in the picture above?

It’s a bench.

Sneaky bench for a sneaky guy.

This is nice.

Relaxing.

This is a nice visit, but it is now time to head into the city.

There is supposed to be a Snicker’s chicken laying candy easter eggs.

I did not find the Snicker’s chicken.

What I did find is one of the few National Park locations in New York City that I do not yet have a passport stamp from, yet: The Tenement Museum.

There are many tours at this location.

I ask a staff member which tour they suggest and they say “The Under One Roof tour.”

A group of six of us are on this tour today which starts in the entry way of the building.

We move upstairs to one of the apartments to learn about the families that lived in this building.

The indoor windows are explained during the tour. I won’t spoil it for you.

This is an absolutely fabulous place to visit and since there are several tours, I look forward to coming back again!

While returning home on the subway, at one point an MTA worker got on the intercom to yell out “Do not get on this train!”

It was a busy night and a full train.

Penny gave me a judging look upon returning home.

I assure you the cats had food the entire time I was away.

This look is not warranted.

Sunday March 30th, 2025

Waking up sore today. As the weather warms up, I’m able to go out more often.

Today’s plan is to take a free tour at a historic house here in Queens at the Voelker Orth Museum.

This place is fascinating!

This may be my favorite museum visit due to the unusual situation that led to this house becoming a museum.

Check out the working Victrola!

This house was passed down through generations of a family, but upon the death of the final owner the house was donated to charities such as the Audubon Society.

The house was overgrown with many plants and it seemed that there may not be much to do but sell the house for the land, but in the walls were found old US Bonds that were worth a lot of money and it was enough to pay for the transformation of the house into a museum.

This is a delightful place that hosts many great activities.

If you’re in the area, they have lovely events listed on their website.

After the visit, I am hungry and so I enter the first restaurant that I find which is a Korean grill restaurant titled Daori BBQ.

I am quickly seated and upon sitting down I am stricken with anxiety.

I have no idea what I’m doing.

I don’t know what the device in front of me does.

Is that a steam table basket slot on the right?

I rush to my phone to figure out what I should be doing and the advice I find online is “Ask your server for help and a suggestion.”

I follow this advice.

I believe my server is also the owner of the establishment.

She gathers parts of the main dish and shows me how they are combined. She then shares suggestions about ways to change the flavor based on my preferences.

This is a delightful meal and I am glad that I came here to try this, but the anxiety of being alone and not understanding the food preparation is a lot.

I am so thankful that for the help.

Truly a fantastic experience.

The ride home through Flushing is fun.

Penny did not miss me.

Keanu and I, on the other hand, decided to try different group poses together.

Judgmental

“What’s that sound?”

Distraught

Time to end the night with some video games.

Remus says “Fear not young warrior. The fear lies only within your head.”
