Recently my Android 5a phone decided to stop working and I was not backing up my photos in the cloud and so we have a few more days of lost images.
Luckily, thanks to this blog, I only lost two or three weeks worth of images.
So for the postcard that I sent to my pal Tony in Michigan of a very old photo which I had placed a children’s sticker on at a museum in Philadelphia you will have to take my word for it.
On the other hand, the postcard that I sent to Finland of the ugliest card in my collection, I selected this bad boy.

I don’t much care for multi-image postcards and this one is also glossy on the back which makes it difficult to write on.
I’m noticing more and more postcards are made this way by folks who have clearly never tried to use one of the products that they sell.
Let us first talk about the traitor mentioned in the title of this post.
On Saturday October 5th, 2024 I take a solo trip up into The Bronx for the first time.
There is a national historic site that I need to get a stamp and sticker for, and gosh darn it, this is a good weekend to do it.
St. Paul’s Church National Historic Site
Let me first introduce you to Revolutionary Westchester 250.
My plan for the day was to drop in with no research or expectations because I love a good surprise.
If there is an opportunity to take a tour, I will take it.
What I find instead is that a livestream is about to begin, but I can join the live audience.
I have no idea what is about to happen, but I’m here for surprises and to learn and this feels like a great opportunity for both.
So I sit.
And I learn.
About Treason of the Blackest Dye.
Short version of the story: Remember when Benedict Arnold was being a traitor?
Another traitor got caught by Americans pretending to be British and in the traitor’s boot was a paper and two names.
One of these names was recently recognized by a historian and a new piece of American history at pivotal point in history where we could have won or lost our freedom has been discovered.
It’s a whole thing and a fascinating topic.
I went for a bite at Columbus Diner after the talk and had sausage for the first time.
I don’t eat pork, but they had a beef sausage and it was suggested by my server.
I don’t think it’s something I would have again, but it was interesting and new and I’m glad that I tried it.
I think I was supposed to mix it with my French toast and syrup.
Also the soda from the fountain here is extra thick.
Staff here is super cool.

I got an amazing postcard from Austria.

This is my first postcard that arrived in an envelope.
There was a long letter that also came with the postcard and it was a delightful read.
I sent a long reply back to the person who sent this amazing correspondence.

Today I receive my first iPhone.
Let’s rewind a little bit. I have a history of switching phones when something goes wrong.
I loved owning a Palm phone. If they kept making them, I’d have kept buying them. I loved owning a PlayStation phone. If they had kept making them, I would have kept buying them. I moved to Samsung phones and loved the Notes for being bigger until I bought the Note 7 which was an explosive device.
I was forced to return it for a free downgrade.
I thought Samsung would do the right thing and let me upgrade to a slightly nicer phone of similar value, but they did the opposite. The gave me a cheaper phone and did not pay out the difference or offer anything to even out the cost difference.
So I’ve never bought another Samsung phone.
I switched to Pixel.
Less bloatware on top of the Google software and less likely to explode and be banned from going onto airplanes.
Eventually I needed to replace my Pixel 3 and the newest Pixel phone was the Pixel 5a and so I made the switch to the newer upgraded Pixel 5 only to discover that it was actually an experimental downgrade that overheats and they would not help me with a repair when it broke.
So now I will never buy another Pixel phone.
I’ve also been getting grumpy with the Google Home voice recognition and software anyways, so it’s time to make the slow transition to Apple products.
I’ll continue to use Windows computers for the time being, but I’m making the transition on the smart phone and I’ll switch over to an Apple watch soon.
Thank you for reading “Old man yells at broken phones.”
For more old man rambling, ask me about Verizon sometime.
But now for the good bad news.
One of my small adventure ideas is to use a different shower setting.
I have one of those shower heads that you can twist to receive multiple styles of water flow.
I always aim for a medium “flow” of water.
Something steady that doesn’t hurt, but isn’t too weak.
I thought to myself I should try the other settings, but rather than crank up the pressure which would be my second choice for the shower head setting, that I should try to find the worst setting and use it for the whole shower.
For science.
And to give it a fair shot.
The shower was fine.
I have gone back to the regular setting.
I kind of want to try the high pressure setting now that I’m writing this all out, though.
The important part of this day is that I now have a working phone with a camera again and so I’ll have pictures in my upcoming posts.
Future topics include sexy Mike Myers, looking for a night market, but finding a volley ball championship, Roosevelt Island Irish chicken curry with a watermelon spritz, converting my drivers license, seeing Hamilton, NBA, laughing so much that Lauri was laughing at me.
October is a busy month.
There’s a lot to talk about.
I’ll see you on the next post, amigos.
