๐Ÿฆ• Dino & Bug Museum & A Mystery Celebrity

Sunday July 28th, 2024

After the visit to the U.S. National Monuments today (previous post) I returned home and purchased some new stamps for postcarding.

August 1st is the release of the Dungeons & Dragons stamps and so I preoreded them as well as a set of the Jeopardy stamps.

I am very excited to work these into the mix for upcoming postcards.

I am continuing to sell off my PS2 game collection which is currently taking up a large segment of the corner of our bedroom in our small NYC apartment.

I am excited to say that the sales have been pretty regular and today I sold my copy of NBA Ballers. Great game.

I also sent a postcard to someone in the UK today (sorry, forgot to take a picture) who loves NYC.

I made sure to find the best NYC postcard in my collection to mail to them.

What a delightful coincidence to have received this request.

This lovely card is currently on its way to Portugual. I should learn some Portuguese, but right now my focus is on Japanese for an upcoming vacation.

I am beginning to eye my max cards on postcrossing again.

I must send 50 cards to increase my max ammount of sendable cards by 1 after having sent my first 50 cards.

I must reach 100 sent cards to increse again and I currently have sent 64 cards which have been marked as received. 36 to go.

I rarely hit that max card limit, in fact it’s been months, but I’m sending more postcards now and I’d like to have more wiggle room.

Random: DuoLingo say’s I’m leet.

Here’s a selfie with an olympic cookie.

It was given to me by my lovely wife who is way cooler than me and thoughtful and sexy and had no part in this paragraph.

I have been bad about taking pictures this week and for that I am sorry.

I also sent a postcard to Portugual. I sent an old 60’s or 70’s card of cacti. It was a good one.

Do not worry, though.

I have created a dramatic reenactment.

Please note how good of a card it was.

I miss visiting Texas state parks.

This is not something that I have yet done in New York, though I am planning to.

I bring this up because my Texas state park pass is about to expire.

I received an email this week and it has me thinking back about the good times.

It all started with Inks Lake State park which is where I visited and decided to make the purchase.

There is so much value to be had with a Texas state park pass if you enjoy camping.

The New York pass goes by the calendar year, in Texas it is valid for 365 days after purchase.

I prefer the Texas method.

Check out these cool postcards that I received from postcrossing.com.

I have put serious thought into doing this before.

Calculating how many small valued stamps I can add to a card and still send it.

It always feels strange to buy low value stamps.

A sheet of penny stamps costs twenty cents.

It doesn’t feel like anything should cost less than twenty-five cents in 2024.

There’s always the discussion of doing away with pennies, but hot take: Let’s just keep quarters and do away with pennies, nickels & dimes.

๐Ÿคท

I don’t know how to tell the difference between a clam and an oyster, but I’m pretty sure this postcard that I received is of one of them.

I’m leaning towards oyster.

I sent my pal in Michigan a postcard as I often do, but I used to send him silly lame cards, but now he’s getting the good ones.

Check out this old Metal Gear Solid postcard that I sent him this week.

That card is 12 years old.

The American Museum of Natural History!!!!

Pro tip: If you visit, buy your tickets online and use the entrance listed in the email.

The line is very long in the front of the building, but we just waltzed on in by using the side entrance.

๐Ÿ˜Ž

This has been one of the places that I most wanted to visit here in NYC and today is the day that we made it!!!

And let me tell you, not only did it have the dinosaurs that I love and expecgted, but it also had the bugs that I love and did not expect!

Domino roaches?

Hell yeah!

Tobacco worms?

Hell yeah!

T-Rex skulls?

You better believe it!

(Please do not fact check if this is a T-Rex skull).

This place is AMAZING!

We used their photo booth.

So many great dinosaur builds!

Dinosaurs is the fourth floor, but on the first floor they have the bugs!

There are also bugs on other floors such as this display, but they’re mostly on the first floor.

The giant metal bees are awesome.

I purchased five bug postcards during this visit.

There is more than the dinos & the bugs. We also took a tour of the Hip-Hip jewelry exhibit Ice Cold.

We viewed Mayan clay work.

As well as these amazing pieces.

Awe inspiring.

We had a lovely visit.

As we were leaving I decided to take a photo under the tunnel exit.

Lauri thought it would be a good idea to photobomb this picture.

I have evidence.

She’s really going for it to get in there before I can take a picture.

But I took pictures anyway. ๐Ÿ˜›

Photobombed.

Here’s a picture from inside of the museum.

I highly suggest visiting this museum and seeing the leafcutter ants on the first floor.

After the museum, WE EAT!

Nachos for Luari.

And veggie bowl for me.

Hmm. I didn’t take a picture.

I will work on this.

Lauri says I’m ADHD because I can’t sit still and I mess with stuff if I’m not receiving stimulation.

This is the Upper West Side location of Peacefood.

As is common, I told our server to surprise me with my food order. The only caveat being that I must not receive the same meal as Lauri.

This is so that we can swap bites and try two meals each.

A delightful restaurant with great food.

We will eat here again, I’m sure.

Along the block there are a lot of small stalls peddling various items and we made a $12 purchase of a jelly & jam.

The Dandelion Jelly tastes like honey.

On our way home from this adventure we had a small run-in with a celebrity on the train, but I don’t know who they are.

I only know they’re famous because someone else on the train took off their headphones and said “Whoa! My mom watches you all the time!”

I am not comfortable taking a creeper pic in this scenario, so you will have to accept my written description.

He looked to me a little bit like Pierce Brosnan, but older.

Monday, August 5th. The stamps arrive.

Besides the D&D & Jeopardy stamps, I also ordered a lot of 80s stamps.

I was looking to purchase 19 cent stamps as currently international postage is $1.65.

In order to achieve this ammount of postage with unique stamps, the best method would be for me to use two 73 cent stamps and a 19 cent stamp.

There are no 19 cent stamps that can currently be purchased.

Or 20 cent stamps for that matter

I can use two 10 cent stamps, but then I’m doubling stamps and I really want to keep the stamps to three or less if possible, so 73, 73 & 19 is the best combo that I have found.

Trying to buy 19 cent stamps on ebay is a bit tricky, though.

I could pay more for these stamps, but if I’m going to pay extra then I’ll just over pay with postage that I buy from the post office.

I’d rather use a 24 cent stamp to over pay the postage by 5 cents.

So to save money, I took a gamble.

I found an ebay seller that sells 80s stamps in a set.

$10 worth of stamps for $7.

It’s a deal!

I did not receive any 19 cent stamps, but these are a fantastic selection and I did not over pay.

I did receive many 32 cent, 15 cent and 6 cent stamps.

These are denominations that are not currently available for purchase and they will certainly be used.

Tuesday August 6th, 2024

Today I decided to send a postcrossing card and the user I got had a lot of requests, many of which I could not meet so I hope they are not disappointed by my card.

I used some of the 80s stamps on this one.

One of the requests was for comedy cards.

I believe this is fitting.

As per usual, I send a postcard to my pal Tony.

This is one of the postcards purchased at the museum.

Tony also received the first D&D stamp.

I have a pal who has retired who will be spending some time in The Philippines soon, and so I sent him a card in Nebraska.

He gets the big ol’ armadillo card that I’ve been sitting on for a while.

For this oversized card I also use a regular postage stamp, rather than a postcard stamp.

My first time using the Jeopardy stamp.

It’s a nice one.

I also found some funny stickers that I think he’ll get a kick out of.

High five, Remus. I hope no one gets jealous and attempts to climb your home out of rage like King Kong.

Penny!
