๐Ÿ๏ธ Governors Island National Monument Done Wrong

June 15, 2024

First we need to talk about this postcard.

Beautiful artwork, but clearly created by someone who doesn’t send postcards.

The back of this card is glossy and extremely difficult to write on.

Luckily I am aware of this issue and so I used a gel pen to write my message to my pal Tony and I then let the card sit overnight to dry.

It still smeared.

So I abandoned this card for a month.

I am writing this post on July 17th, 2024 and yesterday was the day that I put a sticker over the original message and address and wrote a new message and address.

I mean…

The same address.

Tony still got the card.

I wonder if it will bug him to see the original message, but unable to read it as it is partially covered and partially smeared.

Oh, and the ink was dry after sitting around for thirty-something days.

Overnight was not enough time.

This is noted for future postcarding.

Governors Island! (It feels like the name should have an apostrophe)

This is one of the national parks in NYC that has a sticker and stamp for the passport book.

The ferry tickets are confusing, but this is mostly Google’s fault as Google maps will tell you to go to the wrong place.

Get online or purchase ferry tickets inside and ride to the island.

Cars are generally not allowed.

This is a walk and bike island.

As I often do, I came in blind. I did no research in advance and as is often the case, this was a mistake. (It’s not always a mistake. I love a good surprise and I’ve had several thanks to coming in blind).

The island has several sections to visit. There’s areas like this where a band was playing music while visitors wander to view the old structures.

And there are areas that are lined with small shopping stalls.

What’s that behind me?

Nothing.

Lauri got me.

We have recently begun to feed our cats at designated times as we have had a few health scares lately and we also missed our first ferry and so our time on the island was short.

I was never able to find a visitor’s center or park HQ to get my sticker/stamp and so as we were leaving to wait for the ferry to return us to Manhattan I asked the park guide at the entrance where the stamp is (I was hoping it was here at the entrance) and he politely explained that it was on the opposite side of island.

Not a quick trip to run over and grab it.

I will need to come back again later to prove that I was here.

Some notes.

Bathrooms are rare, but they are on the maps around the island.

The ferry runs every hour.

Show up early before the place is packed.

Ask where the stamp is at the gift pagoda at the entrance to the island.

Take lots of pictures.

We then stopped for a nice meal, but I forgot to write down the name of the place.

Please accept this picture in exchange for the name.

I mentioned health scares for the cats.

Poor Penny is still weak from FIP and we also just learned about her eye herpes, hence the squinting.

One adventure we took in Austin that was a lot of fun was to visit every single library in the city.

This would be quite the task to do here in New York City.

I don’t have a library card yet, but Lauri was kind enough to let me check out a library book with her’s.

She did offer the follow criticism, though: “Why are you checking out this book? You’re not any of these things?”

Penny says “Hey!”
