Postcards!

This one went to my pal Tony (who is in Detroit). It cost two cents to send “For foreign.”

And this card went to Germany with Postcrossing.
I picked this one up in Portland, Oregon.

I have been exploring around my apartment to get to know the area and today I discovered Astoria Park.

The Kung Fu folks here are territorial.

There is also a community garden in the area.

There are two post offices near me and I went to buy some stamps on this walk. The first one didn’t have stamps to sell, so I walked to the other one and they didn’t have 40 cent stamps (note that I am posting this about a month and a half after this day and I just ordered the 40 cent stamps online yesterday).
On August 1st the Dungeons & Dragons stamps are released!

I have had great experiences in NYC and so I don’t want to focus on the negative, but one small difference that I have found frustrating is that with smaller businesses there are more likely prone to be mistakes.
Several times I’ve been charged the wrong amount or found expired/spoiled food at a store.
Today I went to try a new grocery store with a high rating and it was a nice place, but then when I got home I realized that I had been overcharged by $2 for my coffee creamer.

They were cool about it. Looked at the receipt, the creamer I bought and handed me $2, but this has happened to me several times. I really need to pay closer attention to prices when shopping.
And then today the bombshell of bad news hit.
Our youngest cat Penny was diagnosed with FIP.

The good news is that this is no longer a death sentence for cats.
She likely got it in Laredo, Texas when she was in the overcrowded pound there.
There are two pieces of good news about this, though.
First, she has the slow acting version.
Second, there is now a cure.
The bad news about the cure is that it has not yet been tested and approved in the US.
I can’t get into the details, but we were able to find medicine for Penny and she is doing much better.
Also, the medicine is now approved in the US.
I had taken Penny to two different vets in Texas and neither of them caught this, but the vet here in New York was able to tell just by reading over the email that we sent.
I don’t want to put too much blame on the Texas vets because one, it wasn’t as noticeable at first. Penny had a slow decline. And two, Penny also has eye herpes which likely muddied up the issues we were looking into.
Again, Penny is doing much better and we are hopeful that she will be fully cured very soon (the cure is a 3+ month process).

I went on another walk today and grabbed a sandwich while I was out for Lauri.
While chatting with the workers at the shop they gave me a free sandwich.
This is coco bread.

It was a nice sandwich and we’ve been back to this place several times.
Good people working here. They always make things right.

I also purchased some street horchata on my way home.
I love horchata.

I’m still visiting all of the local tabletop game stores to find my favorite, but today I learned during one of these visits that the popular board game Wingspan (a game about birds) has an alternate printing called Wyrmspan that is about dragons.
That’s neat.

I sent another postcard to Tony.

All of my postcards to Tony start with the date, time, weather and “Tony!”
Goodbye postcard.

We’re still unpacking.
Here’s a picture of Keanu being naughty.

View of the city:

View of Lauri next to the city.

There is a gondola that you can take from Manhattan to Roosevelt Island.

My name is Levi & I wanted to do it, but then I saw this.

Oh, check out this famous firehouse.

And here is a sample of vet humor.

This was from a regular visit for Keanu.

Today our landlord tried to gaslight us and say that they don’t make our size of blinds any more and that we can buy curtains and the superintendent will put them up for us.
So I sent him a link to blinds that can be purchased locally that are the right size as well as a summary of what he said.
It was passive aggressive. I’m working on this. But also screw that guy.
While out on a walk this day there was a spot that had a bunch of free books set out and also a warning sign that a bird may attack.
On my way back I passed this spot again and a guy looking at the books was attacked by the bird, which then flew at me like “Are you with this guy? You can get lost, too!”
Neither of us took a free book.
Successfully protected by mama bird.

Another postcard for Tony

And one to a young person in Italy who loves Peanuts, the comics. I added a bunch of Peanuts stickers to the back of this one.

Remus can see into your soul and does not like what she sees!

Keanu doesn’t like it either.

And we went back to the Ghostbusters building as there was an event.
This was neat, but the line for swag was far too long and so we left to walk along the coast.

Beautiful area.

There was a pen & paper tabletop RPG bundle sale on itch.io.
I bought it.
It has over 130 books.
It has Goblin Errands.
I love that game.
I sent Tony another postcard about my partner Lauri being the worst.

She knows what she did.
Please enjoy more cat pictures.
So about the title of this post.
You always hear about the dangers and rudeness of New York City, but it has been my experience that people here are good and compassionate.
They may be blunt, but this is not the same as rude.
When mistakes happen, everyone has gone out of their way to make things right (minus the landlord, but we’ll say that he’s from Boston).
It feels like folks have each other’s backs here.
Like the city can be tough, but people get it and will be helpful.
I’ve only been here for around two months, but this has been my impression, so far.
Also, it’s quieter here than in Austin, Texas.
Didn’t expect that.
Penny says “I bet there’s a donut in here!”

Also I don’t remember what this is a picture of, so I’ll just leave it here at the bottom of this post.

Edit: I have been reminded that this picture is from the Museum of the Moving Image.
