Library Adventure!

Friday August 4th. Wreck This Journaling. Two pages for the price of one.

Ripped, glued, stapled, stick glued, taped. Success.

The big adventure was our plans for Saturday. My partner and I were discussing the local libraries and we realized that in Austin there are 21 libraries and we’ve been to 10 of them.

Our goal: to visit the remaining 11 in one day.

I am sorry to say that we got up a little bit late and the libraries close a little bit early and we only made it to nine.

There are still two libraries left unvisited.

But…

I learned some interesting tidbits in this adventure.

1. All of the libraries have seeds for edible foods. If I still had a porch I would have scooped up some of these wonderful offerings. I love growing my own food and spices.

2. It’s harder to find Roleplaying Game Books than I expected. These are often found in the children sections.

3. One library did not have a water fountain, but where one would be expected was a sign about simply making a request to the librarian for bottled water. Absolutely wonderful.

4. There is a lifetime learning program here in Austin for 50+ folks. If only I were eight years older…

5. Every location was delightful and librarians are always the best.

6. It’s interesting to see which libraries are full and busy and which are not. I believe the library hidden inside of the community center may have been the emptiest, though it was also the first one we visited as well as one of the smaller locations.

7. My partner loves books so much that she had me renew my library card so that she could check out more books beyond her allowed limit.

8. The bookmark selection was delightful. If you read about my adventure in Florence, Texas then you’ll know about the bookmarks that I sent to Italy. I’ve kept a closer eye on bookmarks ever since then and I am happy to say that I now have a nice little collection of my own.

As for Sunday, though, this was a day of mourning as one of our friends has aged by another year.

To ease the burden of another year’s passing we invited him to a fancy cafe and bakery that had far too many children and where I also did not take any pictures other than this selfie of sadness.

This morning I made the backup coffee as the good stuff is running low and I want to work my way through some of the other bags we have lying around. Today’s coffee was a pre-ground variety that claims to be a light roast, but it tastes more like a heavy medium roast to me. It’s not bad, but I would say it is a hair above the quality of Folgers. Mind you, I like Folgers but I prefer my Alma natural process coffee more than all others and I view Folgers as the baseline of coffee quality. It’s the “5 out of 10” of roasted goodness.

Oh, and I got a delightful postcard from Luxembourg.

I am noticing that everyone puts several different stamps on the backs of their card while I, on the other hand, have been adding a single internal stamp. I wonder if the value of my stamps equaling the amount of an international stamp would work just as well? It seems that folks on postcrossing are often collectors. I suspect this is a common practice to help out the stamp collecting members of the website.

I’m more interested in connecting with folks around the world, but not as pen pals as I like the randomness of postcrossing. I suppose different people use the site in different ways. I have many postcards to get through as my lovely partner bought me a box of 100, and so I will carry on.

One final note.

I found this book and I plan to look into it further.
